MSI 865PE Neo FIS2R and PATA 133 drive not recognized

Okay, this this the 3rd computer I've built, but the first on an MSI board.
I helped my friend build it because it's his first build. The problem I'm
having is in getting the BIOS on this board to recognize the Maxtor 80GB
ATA133 drive connected to the PATA 133 connector from the Promise
controller. The cable is correctly connected and all connections are
proper. The drive has the Molex connector connected to it and it spins up.
The drive is raw and unformatted. The jumper is set to 'cable select' and
it's using the correct 80 wire cable.

In the BIOS, I saw a setting to enable the Promise SATA controller that this
port is supposedly part of according to the manual. However, the only
settings are 'Disable', 'SATA', and 'RAID'. There is another SATA setting
for enabling the Promise controller and it's set to enable. However, no
drive is detected. The drive is fine, as it's detected in the regular ATA
100 channels.

Any ideas?

This board only support ATA100 drives unless you buy the optional VIA
controller for ATA133/SATA. So you will only see the drive as you said.

What do you mean by "detected", the OS or the bios? The OS won't see it
unless you install the drivers (F6 during load for Win2k or XP).

I believe you'll only see that drive if you enter the promise raid setup
menu which should be a prompt during boot.

Well, this problem has been fixed. I know all too well about Windows not
seeing it without drivers, but the BIOS didn't see it. Apparently, after
you install the drivers, the Promise BIOS gets activated. Until then,
nothing comes up. Even in BIOS, when I activated the Promise chip, it
didn't present me with the Promise BIOS on bootup. It only worked after
installing the drive on an ATA100 port, installing WinXP, and adding the
Promise driver. Now, however, XP claims there is a hardware problem. It
seems it didn't like the Promise drivers or something. I tried getting
newer drivers from MSI's website with no luck. Someone suggested that I get
the TX2 drivers from Promise, and I think I'll try that. Currently, the
drive will not work in the ATA133 connector like I want it to. I get the
BSOD after moving the drive there, despite it working fine on an ATA100
connector. This isn't a major issue, but it sucks when someone pays for
extras like this that doesn't work. It's got to be a driver issue or
something, but currently it's frustrating.

The Promise controller is a RAID controller. You have to enable RAID to use
it. Then install the RAID driver on your hard drive. When you reboot, wait
for the prompt to enter RAID setup. Once in there, it's easier to just do
the auto setup. It will configure for one drive. While it is only one drive,
it wills still be considered RAID. (RAID 0).
