I want to connect a barcode reader to an old msdos laptop through the
serial port.

I want to be able to read into an text files.

Any software available to help me with this?

For printing barcodes - not what the OP was asking for.

Hyperterminal will sort of do the job - read in the barcodes, copy and
paste into a text file.

Google searching doesn't do it for me, I have already tried that, none
of the hits are actually "msdos freeware barcode readers."

The hyperterminal idea might work. Except, for dos I'd have to use
something else. Does ProComm still exist? Or something like it.

A copy of Turbo Pascal and Borland's commo routines would probably
give you what you want. Or even GW Basic. And you could stuff the
read barcode into the keyboard buffer and make serial barcode input
work just like a barcode wedge.

Gee!, does that question bring back memories.

You can download Telix 4.25 here <http://vetusware.com/>. If you
remember ProComm, you should remember Telix.
