MSDE

Brent Wherry

I've developed a new application and I've been using
Access to prototype it. Access really won't support the
production levels we'll see so I wanted to change to SQL
Server.

The first step might have been MSDE but after three days
work I've not managed to install it. It refuses to intall
from the Office release Cd. I've tried three downloads
from the net and the most succesful one said "Can't
intall - refer to the logs for more info". There are no
logs in the product directory and since the product is not
installed, there's no possibility of looking at logs from
the product.

Is MSDE real or simply a marketing concept?

Any advice (very) gratefuly received.

Do you have enough disk space on C:?

Is the Tahoma font installed?

Do you have a previous installation that may be affecting
this one?, you may have to remove it from the registry,
details in msknowledgebase

see article 320873

HOW TO: Manually Remove a Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Instance

Good Luck

The MSDE install logs, I think, are in your temp directory.

Very much real. I've been happily using it for some time.

As Tony states, the MSDE is real and working. But, something you said peaked
my interest. Both JET and MSDE have the same limitations in size, although I
suspect that in practice you can put slightly more information in the MSDE.
Only when you go to a full version of SQL-Server can you put in high
production levels (over 2 GB).

BTW what do you mean by "production levels"?
