MSDE + SQL 2000 Newbie Question

Michelle

I am using Access 2003 and have installed SQL Express 2005. I don't know
too much about the whole SQL thing but I want to start using ADP.

I have tried to install SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition but am having
error message come up that is stopping me.

Ques 1: Do I need to install SQL Server 2000 or will SQL Express 2005 do the
job that I need to in order to develop?

Ques 2: Where can I find more resources on this, as I'm having a difficult
time understanding whether my client has to 'HAVE' SQL server installed if I
produce a ADP or whether I can install SQL Express 2005 and run the app that
way?

Any help is appreciated.
Michelle

If you just looked a few lines down, you would have seen another post
"Access2003 and SQL Server2005", originally posted on 2006-01-06, and
various replies, which answer your question basically.

I'd say, if you want to use Access ADP, then your target should be SQL
Server2000/MSDE2000. If you want to use SQL Server2005/SQL Server Express,
you'd better use MDB front end, not ADP (at least until Access 12 releases
and see what happens to ADP).

Thanks Norman for your reply

I have infact read that post you mentioned. But I was still unsure what the
situation was. What you said so succinctly has in fact cleared up one of my
questions. I will post to the other thread.

Thanks

Keep posting in the thread but tell us more about this error message that
you get when you try to install the developer edition of SQL-Server. Also,
the newsgroup m.p.sqlserver.setup might be an even better place than this
one as this question is more related to the installation of SQL-Server than
it is to ADP.

Also and excerpt if you want your users the ability to go offline, your
users don't have to install SQL-Server software to access a remote
SQL-Server installation.

I forgot to say that there is also the possibility of using the
compatibility mode of 8.0 (same as SQL-Server 2000) for the database in
SQL-Server Express 2005. However, I didn't have the time to try it yet, so
I don't really know if it will work with ADP.

Also, I don't know if this option is available with the Express edition of
SQL-Server 2005.
