msconfig command

In Win98 I used the msconfig command to "clean out" all
the junk programs that add themselves to your automatic
startup menu. That doesn't work in Win2000. What command
or utility replaced it?

You can copy the msconfig.exe file into Windows 2000 and run it there

Start > Run > Regedit.exe

MSConfig is/was a Win98/Me utility, brought back in WinXP, which
is also targeted at the home consumer market. There is no equivalent
utility included with Win95/WinNT/Win2K.

In most cases, one need only open the offending program and
deselect the option to "display icon in the system tray" or to "start
when Windows starts."

To view the list of your start up programs, look in the
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up
folders, and in the system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys. These can
also be viewed, if I remember correctly, by right-clicking My
Computer, selecting "Manage" and expanding System Tools-- System
Information -- Software Environment -- Startup Programs. To prevent
any of them from starting at login, you'll have to delete shortcuts
from the startup folder(s) and/or edit the registry. I should point
out that, in order to make such system modifications requires one to
have administrative privileges to the machine in question. I should
also point out that one should not even consider editing the registry
unless he is fully confident that he knows exactly what is going to
happen as a result of each and every change.

You are partly right....
If you type in msconfig at the Run box on Windows 2000, nothing will happen
You CAN however, copy msconfig.exe to a Windows 2000 machine and run it.

....It's not that it doesn't SUPPORT msconfig, it's just not included. : )

Greetings --

Well....., In a way, it _is_ that Win2K doesn't truly support
MSConfig.exe.

If you copy the Win98 version of MSConfig.exe to a Win2K machine,
it'll run and do pretty much as intended, but with error messages that
must be by-passed.

If you copy WinXP's version of MSConfig.exe to a Win2K machine,
it'll normally run without error messages, and appear to function
properly, but will often leave orphaned registry entries, because
Win2K lacks the registry keys to properly deal with all of MSConfig's
options.

And this ignores the fact that whomever initially provides the
MSConfig executable, whichever version, is apparently violating the
respective OS's EULA by separately distributing OS components. Or can
we assume, as you post as a Microsoft employee, that you've checked
with Microsoft's legal department about the "legitimacy" of
distributing Microsoft OS components to people who may well not have a
license to use the OS from which the component originates?

Hey, I'm just trying to help. Don't get legal on me ;-)
....I didn't know that people read EULAs, maybe I pencil in some time for
that someday
