MS04-011 bug but no VPN files present

Doug Edworthy

I've been hit with the MS04-011 patch bug causing a Dell
Optplex GX240 to hang at the log-on splash screen. Solved
it by re-booting + F8 into Safe Mode, and (eventually)
uninstalling the patch.

Due to the procesor-hogging caused by Microsoft's bug,
this took 25.5 hours to achieve and my machine is left
unprotected.

Noting Msoft's article 841382 I've searched the hard disk
for ipsew2k, imcide and dittape.sys files. They do not
exist on this machine.

Please can anyone help me solve this problem, I'm feeling
nervous about making Internet connections until I can get
the patch installed successfully.

Incidentally, a Dell Latitude laptop installed the patch
without problem.

I'm having the same problem, I spent about the same amount
of time figuring out what the problem was and then
uninstalling the patch on my W2000 P4 Desktop. I found
dlttape.sys in my [\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386] folder. I
don't think I am using this driver since it is for a SCSI
tape drive and I don't have SCSI anything. I'm tempted to
delete it and reinstall the patch but I don't feel like
uninstalling it again. I had the Sasser worm restarting my
pc at work all day but our IT dept finally took care of
it. If anyone has any suggestions they would be
appreciated. For me the MS MS04-011 "bug" is debilitating
just like the Sasser "worm". I was keeping up with my MS
Updates so this is a little discouraging especially since
I need to look forward to the eventual arrival of the
mother of all bug, worms, and viruses ... a new Service
Pack.

Hi All,

Am having the same problem on a Dell Prescision Laptop
(but not on the Dell Latitude), and it all started last
week with one of the critical updates. Was wondering
whether anyone had tried the work-around fix suggested in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 841382, basically
to disable policyagent?

How does one go about getting the hotfix?

Best Regards,

Nick
