MS Word TOC Numbering Lost When Emailing

Ihave Word 2003. I am using a custom template with my document. When I
complete the doc and create the TOC, all is fine and TOC populates page
numbers correctly.

When I send that completed doc to someone else across an email server, the
page numbering disappears when they open it.

Why does this happen?

This is probably caused by their opening it in Reading Layout view, which is
known to corrupt TOCs. There are three possible solutions:

1. Persuade the recipient to disable Reading Layout view (Tools | Options |
General). The recipient may thank you for this.

2. Persuade the recipient to copy the document to the HD before opening it
in Word instead of opening it directly from the attachment.

3. Instruct the recipient, after changing views, to click in the TOC and
press F9 to update it, which will correct the page numbers.
