I'm about ready to pull my hair out!!! I need to install
MS Word 2002. Everyone says I should be able to do this,
however, when I try to install it, I get an error 1608:
setup unable to locate a qualifying product.
I have contacted the e-machines help desk- they told me
to restore XP- I did that and I'm still getting the same
error. PLEASE... Does anyone know anything helpful in
reguards to this?? Thank you!

it sounds like you dont own Word 97/2000 and you are trying to install and
upgrade. You need to purchase a full copy or install a preivous copy. if
Word came on your computer contact e-machines for more support.

Sounds like you're trying to install an upgrade, or perhaps use an upgrade
serial number.

Find a product to upgrade (prior version of Word,) or use the full version.

sorry for sounding kind of stupid... but I want to make
sure I'm understanding you- What youre saying is... I
have to buy a previous Word version- ???....
Say I goto the computer store- and buy Word 97/2000.....
will I be able to install this and THEN upgrade with
2002??? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

Did Word (part of Office XP) come with (preinstalled) with your eMachine? If it did contact eMachine to find out how to reinstall it.

If you purchased the program you need the full version, not the upgrade version.

If you have an older version of Office (97 or 2000) you can purchase the upgrade version of Office XP (or Word) and use the old version as a qualifier to verify that you are entitled to upgrade to it. When installing the new program you'll need to put the old CD in the drive before the install starts.

If you purchased it, it sounds like you purchased an upgrade version.
If so, you have two options:
1. See if you have a "qualifying" program to update - typically an older
version of Word, though some use other programs. There should be a list
somewhere. If you don't,
2. Take the upgrade version back to the store, and tell them you need a full
version, not an upgrade version. It'll probably cost a little more, but
won't give you the same problem.

What CD are you trying to install Word from? That is the message you
get if using an Office *upgrade* CD and there is no earlier version of
an Office component to install. Windows versions (like XP) are quite
separate from Office and are not a qualifying product for it
