MS vs. Ad-Aware

I ran the MS beta version and then Ad-Aware SE today and
in that order. The MS beta version found no spyware. Ad-
Aware found 44 objects. This is not the first time
something like this has happened. Any suggestions?

The beta 1 release of Microsoft AntiSpyware does not detect
cookies/dataminers, hopefully in beta 2.

Hi Lynn,

Suggestions? Sure enough in the Beta1 version, the program doesn't go into
the cookie jar, nor does it chase data miner objects.

If what the other folks found (and Ad-Aware is also a fine program) were
dataminers and cookies, I'll guess that's likely the 44.

Today I downloaded the current version of Microsoft
Antispyware Beta including current definitions and
immediately ran a scan. The results were 46 memory
processes, 23,097 files, and 9397 registry items scanned,
and no malware found.

I then immediately opened up my Ad-Aware [v1.06R1],
downloaded new definitions [SE1R62 17.08.2005], and ran a
scan. The results were 37 memory processes, 1539 process
modules, 167,104 objects scanned, and 19 significant and 3
insignificant malware objects found.

Since I first downloaded MS Antispyware Beta 1 I do not
believe it has detected a single malware object. In that
same period of time my Ad-Aware has detected 79 malware
objects.

I ran Ad-aware for the first time in many weeks today. Updated definitions
and ran a full scan. It found 10 critical objects, all data miner cookies.

As you may have noted, Microsoft Antispyware does not scan for or
selectively remove cookies, so I wasn't at all surprised at this result.
