MS Visual C ++ Runtime Libary error

Apologies if this has been asked before - I did a
quick check and couldn't spot that that was the case.

Whenever I use a graphics programme i.e., Corel
Paint Shop Pro 9 or X and do a file open to browse
the photos I have in My Documents\My Pictures,
the program freezes and I get a Not Responding message
when I do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

Also, more times than not, when I try to open a new image
in File\Open\or Browse, I get the following message:

"MS Visual C ++ Runtime Library - this application has
requested Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please
contact the application's support team" - the programme then shuts
completely down!

Windows Installer seizes up periodically also when I try to
reinstall a graphics programme.

I have done everything I can think of including a new Windows
Installer recommended by the MS Knowledge Base but I'm still having
the problems.

Any ideas or comments would be gratefully received. I feel
the problem emanates from Windows XP Pro which I should have
said I run in the first place - legal copy!
