Seeing as I only freshly installed this XP onto a newer bigger hd a couple
of weeks ago, I thought it was time to "Windows update."

So I made a "restore point" labelled "b4xpupdates".....hit the "windows
update" .....did the 33%....66%.....100%.....viewed the proposed updates,
mostly critical updates and security patches, and at the bottom of the list
were two driver updates for my Nvidia card and and updated driver/s for my
Creative 137? whatever it is...i've forgotten. So I thought I'd deselect
all the critical and security updates for a few minutes and do the driver
updates. ....done.....reboot......CRIPPLED WINDOWS XP Pro !!!

First thing I noticed Norton a/v is missing from the system tray, and it
won't load from the System Works common interface, Norton locks up and so
have to "End Task."

Right click big blue IE on desktop | Properties | Connections ....another
lock up, can't get at the Connections screen.

......"System Restore'd" to "b4xpupdates" as I labelled my restore point,
all seems fine. I suppose I'm lucky that my drivers and sound are working,
as is everything else, and that I didn't end up in dll hell !~!~!

I am now NOT "warming" to XP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Computers are not intended for fools.

If you don't install the critical updates your computer is
very vulnerable to attack. Also, you must run a firewall to
block MSBlaster worms (one critical patch fixes that hole,
but until you have the patch, only a firewall provides
protection.)

I would suggest that driver updates are best done by you,
selecting your known hardware and looking for the updates.

The drivers that MS offers do have a tendency to screw up computers.
Get your driver updates from the manufacturers of your hardware.

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!
"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei!"

Not really, I was just trying to say that computers aren't
fool-proof and strange inter-actions happen. See bumper
stick "S**T Happens"

It seems that your proper planning and MS worked together
with "system restore" to save your computer.

But you do need to apply the critical updates first thing
when you go on-line, before starting general browsing. And
before going on-line to get those updates from MS and Norton
(or McAfee) be sure to turn the XP firewall ON. Because you
will be infected with Blaster as soon (or very quickly) as
going on-line. MS will be changing the built-in firewall
default to ON.

On the whole driver updates from Windows Update are not a good idea.
They may have been formally certified but are often way behind the ones
available from the maker. Get the download from www.nvidia.com of the
latest drivers they advice for XP, and then boot to Safe mode and
install those. And ignore drivers in future.

As far as critical updates go, *first* ensure the firewall is on before
connecting to the net at all, or the Blast worm will be in before you
have patched for it. Then get SP1 - if not included on your XP CD, then
the cumulative security patch 823980

I would say that it is always a good idea to use the vendor driver over the
WU driver as the vendor drivers, while placed there by the specific vendor,
are typically out of date.
