MS planning registry cleaner?

Rumor has it, MS will be coming out with a FREE AV bundled with the FREE
Anti-Spyware....
Must have been a significant enough rumor as Symantec and McAfee stock
went
down.
AVG/AVAST others may have to scale down efforts, unfortunately as
revenues
may fall on their fee-based products.

Some excerpts:

Late Tuesday, Microsoft announced a product code-named Morro that it
said is
designed to offer "core anti-malware protection" from threats such as
*viruses and spyware.*
Analysts pointed to the fact that Microsoft's existing security product,
known as Windows Live OneCare, has failed to dislodge the market
leaders.
Microsoft would discontinue OneCare some time next year, when Morro is
intended to launch.

"Microsoft's decision to pull the plug on its OneCare security offering
and
a subsequent release of free security software Morro (OneCare lite) is a
sign of capitulation by the 800-pound gorilla on its consumer security
offering," Shaul Eyal of Oppenheimer wrote in a note to clients on
Wednesday. "Our stance all along on OneCare has been tepid at best and a
free offering doesn't alter it as 'free' doesn't necessarily spell
'secure.'

Their current offering should be free, it doesn't rate well enough to charge
people for it

Just out of curiosity, what leads you to conclude that MS is planning a
registry cleaner as part of its new security software?

From what I've read, it sounds as if the free program will focus on security
issues and not contain any of the maintenance features that are currently
available in its online scanner.

Here's a link to Microsoft's press release on the subject.

On a side note, the losses that McAfee and Symantec suffered last Wednesday
weren't that out of line with the decline that the market as a whole
experienced that day. I haven't checked but it wouldn't surprise me if both
stocks have rebounded in the last week. I think you'll find that both stocks
will react to news about cutbacks in corporate technology spending and
layoffs rather than any moves that Microsoft may be making.

Agreed, David B,
But if it were free, I be tthey'd be pushing it as one of their
"critical" updates, and we don't want that, either. I suspect there are
probably royalties to be paid for since they almost certainly didn't
write anything in it themselves if past history holds.
