MS Outlook alternative that works with ActiveSync ?

Since using a smartphone I manage my contacts & phone numbers on the PC.
The only contacts & phone number data base that MS ActiveSync recognises
is, surprise, another MS product, Outlook. I'd like to replace Outlook
as using it for managing the numbers & contacts is the only reason I
have it on my computer.

But the replacement must sync with a smartphone!

Any ideas ?
