How do I stop Word from offering to complete the entry when I start to type
in the date?

I live in the UK and don't want the date in US format.

e.g. I want the date as 20 April 2008
*not* as April 20, 2008

I have searched the Help function that comes with the program but can't find
anything on this subject.

I've not used Office since DOS days but it is difficult to believe that
there is not some overriding date format. Does this help:

Windows Regional Settings should offer the UK date option.

Change your settings in Control Panel>Regional and Language Settings

Note the "short date" format for UK settings.

In Word select Insert, Date and Time. After making your select click on
the Default button.

Do you see the WORD or OFFICE in this group's title? NO.

Ask elsewhere

I've tried the suggestions of Gord and Gerry. When I now start to type in
the date, Word tries to complete it with 21 Apr.08 not 21 April 2008. When
I go to Regional and Language Options settings/Customise/Date, the Short
format is set at dd/MM/yyyy and the Long date format at dd MMMM yyyy.
However Word is still trying to insert 21 Apr. 08. Am I missing something
here?

Both options appear in the list from which you make your choice for the
Default here.

21 April 2008

21 Apr. 08

Have another look at the list. I have Office 2000 but I doubt this
feature will have changed.

After making your selection did you click on the Default button and then
OK etc?

I go to Customize Regional Options/Date

I set it up as follows ans click on Apply

Short Date sample 22/04/2008
Short Date Format dd/MM/yyyy
Date separator /

Long date 22 April 2008
Long date format dd MMMM yyyy

Then I open up a new Word document and click on Insert/Date and Time then I
select the format 22 April 2008 and click on Default. A dialog box opens
which asks 'Do you want to change the English (U.K.) default date format to
match "22 April 2008"? - I click on Yes. The date is then inserted in this
format.

However, if I open a new Word document and start to type in the date when I
get as far as "22 A" Word suggests '22 Apr. 08 (Press ENTER to Insert).
Why??????

Perhaps you need to save it to the normal.dot template or whatever
template you using after clicking on default?

Have you seen this in Help

Automatically insert the current date
Turn on AutoComplete.

Type the first four characters of the date.
For example, type febr for February. Word displays the current month
"February" in a ScreenTip.
Press ENTER to insert the month, and then type a space.
Word displays the current date — for example, "February 13, 1999."
Press ENTER to insert the entire date.

You don't get the option to save to the normal dot template or any other
template under Insert on my version of Word

Hold Shift key down, click File, Save All.

The behaviour you are seeing is different to what I am seeing here. I
cannot explain why this should be. Whilst I regularly use Word I am not
familiar with all it's intricacies so I think I can go no further. I
think you should try a Word newsgroup where you will find others better
versed with how the programme works. I suggest you try:
microsoft.public.word.docmanagement
