Is there any way I can configure Messenger so that it
does not start automatically with Windows XP. I tried
clicking the appropriate boxes in Messenger.

Wow, this groups needs an FAQ ;-)

You can select in Messenger for it not to start in Windows, but I found that
even after doing this it would still start and logon (and cause conflicts
with MSN Messenger).

If you have SP1a installed you can uninstall Messenger from Window's
components. It doesn't actually uninstall the files from the PC, but
prevents Messenger from loading.
