MS mail and News can't compact messages because I get an error saying some
other program was using it. How can that be? Nothing else was running but
ZoneAlarm and AVG anti-virus software. How do I get MS Mail to compact
messages?

It doesn't really compact messages, it compacts the database
for the messages. Go to Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance,
and set the compaction interval to 1 run. Close WM and restart.

If problems persist:
Your AVG antivirus was probably installed with its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

While AVG is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found.

Thank you. I'll try uninstalling AVG and reinstalling it w/o the email
module.

This doesn't work. I completely uninstalled AVG and still got the same error
that something is using the program. What now?

Try compacting and repairing the database: www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/

Then remove your mail account (after uninstalling AVG) and then close and
restart WinMail and then add your account back again and see if it works.

If WMUtil does not fix he problem, consider upgrading to
Windows Live Mail: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Thank you but I don't care to learn a whole new mail program. We already
get our gmail through MSMail. Also we all use Usenet and have many
newsserver accounts and many newsgroups we like. What do you think is the
reason the data thing wont compact? What can be accessing the news/mail
program preventing it?

How do I remove my mail account? Also, all the top buttons in the thing I
downloaded at that site are grayed out even with MSMail closed. They don't
enable when MSMail is closed. All three cannot be clicked on. Are you sure
it's not for OE?
