Why when opening a file is there a message that states "a
document with the same name .... is already open". How do
you fix/eliminate this message box? Thanks

Hi
one idea: Try clearing the TEMP file (close Excel prior to this).
Reboot your computer and try again

Sometimes people have two spreadsheets of the same name in different
folders. Though they're different files, you can't open them both in the
same excel window.

You can open them in different windows, though. One way uses the Windows
"Start" menu. Use the cascaded menu to open Excel for the second file. Once
Excel is running, use "File >> Open" to open the second Excel file.
