You can't start your computer in MSDOS with WinXP
There is no DOS in WinXP

You have to format a floppy, tick the box in the dialog, then boot from floppy. Dos can't read disks with NTFS.

True. You need a free third party app to read/copy ntfs files after a
real boot to dos.

Greetings --

Short answer: You don't.

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit
graphical operating systems, of which WinXP is the latest generation,
has never used or included MS-DOS. The closest they have is the
Command Prompt window.

WinXP, like its predecessors WinNT & Win2K, is a pure 32-bit GUI
OS, and does not include or "ride upon" any version of DOS, as did
Win3.x & Win9x/Me. WinXP does include a command-line emulator for
those times when GUI applets are unnecessary/redundant, but it cannot
be started in "DOS mode."

There is no real mode DOS associated with XP, so you can't. If you have
need of a boot to real mode DOS, reboot to a Win98 startup floppy

Not if it's a diskless workstation it doesn't. ;)

A Disk Operating System is not required, an Operating System is, of
course, and if disk drives are involved then some sort of file system
compatible with the OS is needed.

Is a dickless workstation really a PC tho? Or just terminal similiar to
those used way back in universities and companies that had to be
connected to the ol' IBM 360 to work?

They just boot from a network drive. They're the same as XP. XP can work that way. You just need a PXE network card and any OS can be diskless (note only need hardware). Most diskless work station are the same as any other computer except hard drives aren't instralled in the case (and maybe the BIOS modified to make it refuse to access the drive electronics).

I've got one in the corner here.

You can use some MS-DOS diskette.
WinXP let you format a minimal MS-DOS diskette:
Use the appropriate option in "format diskette" dialog.
You will then have a diskette that can boot wour PC with the MS-DOS
portion of Windows ME (sorry, I don't recall this MS-DOS version, surely
7.2 or 8.0).
There are ONLY the core system files on this diskette( no foreign
keyboard support for instance, no fdisk or anything like this).

Some old Windows 98 Emergency Repair Disk can also boot your PC with
much more support (fdisk, format, CD support...)

Some third party products can also make it possible for you to build
some boot-diskettes with a lot of extra features, such as Windows
Network support : you can access your Windows network shares from a
computer that is booted with such a diskette, and use any dos based
tool (ghost, partition magic) in conjunction with the access to
network shares

Try www.qualystem.com and contact them for LanFloppy product, for
instance

Its different from those in that there is real processing power and RAM
at the station - just file storage elsewhere. But whether it can
correctly be described as a *Personal* Computer I very much doubt - that
seems to me to imply a machine that can do the work entirely of itself
