For no particluar reason today, Access 97 is prompting for password to launch
the program. It auto-fills my LAN id and only requires a password. I tried my
LAN password as well as local admin credentials. I attempted to google the
solution to no avail. I have MS02K3 installed as well, but need Access 97 for
some older dbs. Anywho, it's been working fine for about a year and this
morning I am unable to launch Access 97. Any help would be greatly
appreciated!!

You are joined by default to a workgroup file that has a password set for
the Admin user.

Access ships with security turned 'on'. By default you are joined to a
workgroup file called system.mdw. Every time you open Access it silently
logs you in as a user called 'Admin'.

Part of implementing security is to set a password for the Admin user. This
causes the login box to appear.

First, find out if you are joined to the default system.mdw, or a different
workgroup. Start, Run, wrkgadm.exe. It will show you the path and name of
the workgroup you are currently joined to by default. Change it to the
location of your system.mdw (usually in c:\windows\system folder). You may
want to use Start, Find to locate all *.mdw files on your computer.

Post back if you only have one system.mdw file (might you have implemented
some security in 2003?)

Are you launching from a shortcut? If so perhaps try to launch
from the the Programs folder. Or look at the target in the
shortcut properties and see if the database is opening anything
else. I say this because I have had the experience in the past
if I ran a database that utilized a workgroup information file
(are you familiar with these?) I could have a problem later with
Access generally trying to open the information file when the
prog starts. naturally, If the information file is not
available, access will not open.

It was pointing to a mdw file in c:\. I changed to system.mdw and it opens
fine!! But now I am unable to open any .mde files I could last week. I appear
to not have permission to them (I tried multiple files).

What you need to do for those files is setup a desktop shortcut that points
to your secure mdw. The target would look like
"path to msaccess.exe" "path to mdb" /wrkgrp "path to secure mdw"

This will override your default mdw for only that session. All your
unsecured databases will use the default one.
