mp3 files/songs play with "jumps" in them...

Anyone got any ideas why mp3 tracks "jump" when they are played? This
happens whether a track is being played in WMP or Roxio's media player.

A couple of weeks ago, I put a new mainboard in my brothers computer in
Bournemouth, a MSI KT6v , and after a sort of a battle getting XP Pro
resinstalled, (had to zero fill his hd), everything installed beautifully.

However he recently phoned me to say that every mp3 track he plays "jumps."
This is particularly annoying as he uses his PC mostly for music and mp3
tracks.

Check to see if any additional software is running while the songs are
playing. Especially if he is on dial up and surfing the net at the same
time, this is possible.

Thanx Andre, I suspect that it's software interfering somewhere - I've told
him to switch of as much junk as possible that's loading at startup.

He still has the problem. Looks another trip to Bournemouth.

Had a long session with my brother on the 'phone tonight and we seem to have
solved it. We tweaked several things and the tweak that seemed to work was
moving the swap file back onto the same hd as Windows - the master hd. When
I reinstalled his machine I put the swapfile on the first drive of the 2nd
hd which I now remember is a slower drive.

My brother just sent me this email:-

Hi Richard,
I just downloaded wmp10 but when I tried to open/install it,
it won't work and all I get is a grey windows box giving only an 'OK' option
and a load of gobbledygook like: (though this is not exactly digit for digit
what it says)

???? e?a????t ?a ????? est????? p ?? et?????????p?(????a??e?????
???t????) es??????? u???? ????? atest????? ???

Catch you later

....this was after I suggested to him that he download the latet version of
WMP (v10?), (in the faint hope that a "better" *.acm file would be
installed, and possibly solve his mp3 playback tha skips !),
....it seems to me that a better solution to solving his *.mp3 playback
"skipping" problem would be to reinstall the WHOLE platform from scratch,
with frequent monitoring and testing to ensure that mp3's play back without
skipping, each step of the "re-installation way."

I've ear-marked several web pages on problem solving "mp3 playback that
skips" including a Creative Labs page that even suggests switching off hd
DMA !

oh....doesn't it all take so much time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.....FINALLY .....after making him uninstall his old 1373 drivers, and
letting XP Pro install the driver from its' library, everything is fine !
