Moving users to new server?

I have an old Win2000 TS server that is failing. I've installed Win2000 and
enabled TS on a new server (some of our apps aren't "supported" on W2003).
What is the most effective/efficient way to move my 65 user profiles that are
in the old Documents and Settings folder to the new server?

I prefer to enable roaming TS Profiles, log each user on & off once (on the
old server) which copies their profile to the network, then when you bring
the new server online users profiles will be seamlessly downloaded.

Roaming profiles (normal and TS) are riddled with bugs and gotchas. You
might want to read the MSKB (support.microsoft.com) articles on roaming profiles
before proceeding. I'm not saying roaming TS profiles are a bad idea, just
look before you leap.

You can copy profiles from the Documents and Settings directory after the
user first logs-in/out. If the user accounts are the same on both old and
new servers (in other words the domain hasn't been rebuilt as well) they
should work without issue. If the user accounts are being rebuilt (ie new
accounts, deleted and recreated accounts, or new AD servers, etc) you'll
have to reset the SID in the registry hives for each copied user or abandon
them and manually reconfigure a host of settings. There's an article in
the MSKB about rebuilding profiles that will hit on this and a has a lot
of good hints. Take a look at:

- http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;243420
- http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305506 <- A little
creativity with this will copy the profiles.

Good luck,

Mike
