moving roaming profiles to new hardware

I have 2 servers, same domain, and plan to move all user
roaming profile info to the new server (eventually
discarding the old one)

In testing, I copied the folder of a test user into
the "user" folder on the new server, then changed the
location of the profile in AD user manager.

No luck.

All rights are identical, changing the mapped drive
setting does work, but the profile continues to update to
the old server.

help please,

Very strange. This is usually pretty painless. How long did you wait for AD
replication? Does the user have full control over their profile share on the
new server? Did you try renaming the old profile folder to username.old on
the old server/share?

To move profiles you have to make sure that you are sharing the folder in
which the user profiles are stored. Secondly, make sure that in the user
account properties - in the profiles path, you have \\servername\%username%
populated.

Thank you LanWench and Jim......

yes, the folder is shared - and with the same rights as
the other server.

I waited approximately 15 minutes for replication.

I did not try renaming the old profile. Is this a common
remedy?

Not really a remedy, but I'd try it as a test.
You don't need to share each user's profile folder - that would be a lot of
mess. Share the higher-level folder as a hidden share & grant full control
to all user accounts to it - when the profile is created for the first time
it will get the correct permissions. Users need full control to their
profile folders.

Renaming the folder worked, but no idea how long it took
to work.

While testing other profiles, the renaming did not
instantly take hold.

Any idea on how long the refresh interval is? It sure
would be nice to finish this hellhole upgrade sometime
this year. Gee, I can't wait 'till the next hurdle.
