Moving just field names, etc., in design view.

I learned recently the neat trick of selecting all fields with dragging in
and around the fields themselves. I can remember a time when I'd select
each, box by box.

But now I need to know how to move either the fields or field name boxes
independently of each other. I'd like not to have to move each box
independently again. Is there a way to disengage the field label boxes from
the fields themselves? I'm wondering if there is a different to select just
one group or the other.

You can move either individually by putting your cursor in the
black square in the upper left hand corner. You can select
multiple fields by holding down the shift key and clicking on
the fields you want.

Hi, nope. That black square moves an individual field or field label but
not the group, even if they're all selected.

The shift key does the same as dragging around a group of fields and field
labels. Again, still not a solution to this problem.

I'd like to know if it's possible to move _either_ a group of field labels
OR a group of fields. This is because the default seems to size labels, for
example, much larger than they need to be. By dragging across the groups to
select them, I can then easily globally re-size but I'm left with the space
in between the groups and I'd like to move, for example, _all_ the labels
closer to the field boxes themselves globally. This is just an example, but
this is something I'd like to do more easily. Selecting then re-sizing
_all_ boxes is fast and easy to do; selecting all boxes and then doing
something else, like moving, easy to do globally. It's just moving the
groups independently of each other, all at once, that I haven't been able to
figure out yet.

Thanks for the help! :oD

Ahh now I see. I don't think there is a way to do that, but I
could be wrong. Let's see if anyone else can confirm one way or
the other. Anyone?

You cannot move a group of labels (independent of the controls they're
attached to), without also moving the controls.

You could unattach the labels, if you want (I don't usually do this).
Select a group of labels and hit Ctrl-X then hit Ctrl-v to paste them back
in. They'll be unattached.

Another alternative. Position a single label closer to it's attached
control. Now select all your labels and play with Format, Align Left/Right,
and repeat with the controls to get them all the same spacing.

If the controls are listed as a single column, you might also trying to
select them all (labels and controls both) and then play with Format
horizontal spacing, decrease to get the desired result.

Since you just recently learned the trick of selecting multiple controls via
a mouse-drag, here's another trick for you. You can use the ruler bars to
select multiple controls. Just position the mouse anywhere on the ruler
until you get a black arrow, then click - you'll see that any control in its
path will get selected. This works on the vertical and horizontal ruler
bar. Also you can click and drag along the ruler bar to select a wider
range. Give it a try.
