Moving folders in Windows Explorer

Why haven't I heard of people complaining about how Windows Explorer moves
files and directories without asking "Are you sure?"

This happens when you are moving your mouse in Explorer, and by mistake,
touch the left mouse button and instantly you have moved a whole directory
structure to somewhere else on your drive. This happens so fast that you
sometimes don't even realize that you have moved something.

I am the Information Services Manager for an Architecture firm with 100
employees. I can’t believe that we are the only ones experiencing this
problem. The users move directories (by mistake) everyday. Some of these
directories contain 1GB of data, and is moved in a split second, so the user
doesn’t know what they have done. I have asked all the users to only use the
right mouse key to move and copy, but the problem still persists.

I recognize that this is a “user error†but a slight change in Windows would
make it better for everyone. If Microsoft would have Explorer just ask “Are
you sure you want to MOVE X to Y?†then the problem would go away. I have
had no luck asking Microsoft for help and I have not found a third party
add-on that fixes this BUG. I don’t want to replace Explorer because the
users are used to Explorer and they don’t what to learn a new program.
Please note that this also happens in the open file dialog box in most
programs.

I would also love to know why Microsoft made this change in the first place!
The old File Manager from Windows 3.1 even asked “Are you sure you want to
MOVE X to Y?â€

Any ideas?

If you do not want the delete confirmation dialog displayed...

Right click Recycle Bin | Properties | Global tab |
UNCheck: Display delete confirmation dialog

Display delete confirmation dialog
[[Specifies whether a confirmation message is displayed when you delete
files to prevent you from deleting files in error. If the Do not move files
to the Recycle Bin check box is selected, you cannot change this setting. ]]

This may help Rob, who does not want the confirmation, but I want the
confirmation. I want to at least have an option to confirm moves. I want to
stop my 100 users from moving folders by mistake, so I don't have to go
looking for them all the time.

That's why I replied to Rob.

I have NFI how you can accomplish what you want, that's why I did not reply
to you.

If you do not have SP2, use the old File Manager from Windows 3.1.
Start | Run | Type: progman | Click OK
Works with SP1.

Just out of curiosity I did a search on, confirm file move and copy.
There are some third party apps out there that might be helpful.
I found this one:
http://www.altap.cz/salam_en/features/confirmations.html

No idea if it any good or not. Has a free version and a pay
version.
I'm sure there are probably other just didn't take time to look.

As a point of reference I have about 25 people using Windows and
in the last 5 years I don't remember ever running into this problem.

Thanks for the thought. I had looked for a third party solution before, but
this time I must have used a different word or two. I have found a possible
solution. It's a shareware program called DD Interceptor.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/D-D-Interceptor.shtml

I have downloaded it for testing. It works great so far, it even stops
people from
moving by mistake in the open dialog box of programs (Word, Excel, etc.).
It simply
pops up with a message that states that you are moving a folder from X to Y.
You
can press OK or Cancel. If you hit OK, you can have a log file go to a
central location
on your network, so you can monitor moves.

Has anyone else had experience with this program? I was bitten by a
shareware program
once that sent my email address to thousands of spamers. I am still
recovering.

Thanks again,
Spencer
