Movie in PowerPoint

Lauren

I am researching ways of improving video playback quality
in my PowerPoint presentations. The movies that seem to
look the best are QuickTime movies but I know the latest
versions of QuickTime (3.0 and up) use the Sorensen codec
which is not automatically available to Windows
machines/PowerPoint 2003 and below environments. I know I
have options like hyperlinking to the QuickTime files from
a PowerPoint slide and also using the QTVR ActiveX
Control, but is it possible to download the Sorensen codec
and to install it on my PC so that I can insert the
QuickTime movies? Also, if anyone has used the QTVR
ActiveX control, do you have the same problem that all the
movies seem to play EVERY time you open the PowerPoint
presentation that has them? Is there a way around this?
Please let me know.

Thanks,
Lauren

Thanks so much for your help. I have actually checked out
the web site you suggested. It is very informative. I just
wanted to see if anyone had experience with using the QTVR
ActiveX control and how I may customize the properties so
that all movies don't run at once when I open the
PowerPoint presentation.

Thanks again,
Lauren

Geetesh has the best info on QT and PPT. See

I don't know if it answers all your questions, but it
should be a good start, anyway.

Lauren, you cannot insert new QuickTime content (version 3 and above) even
if you have the Sorenson codec installed. That's because PowerPoint does not
interface with the QT Player - rather it uses the MCI interface and that has
never been updated after QuickTime 2.

The most elegant way to run QT content within PowerPoint is to use the QTVR
ActiveX, but that's not a free product - more importantly, if you distribute
your presentation all recipients will require the QTVR ActiveX control. Last
year, I communicated with George Birbilis who said that the unregistered
version of the product does allow you to view QT content within PowerPoint
as long as you don't mind the nag screen. <g>

Another option is to link your QuickTime movie from a presentation:

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]
[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329820]

Hello,

If none of the suggestions provided give you the functionality that you
were looking for or, if you (or anyone else reading this message) have
suggestions for how and why you think PowerPoint should provide this
functionality (or make it easier), don't forget to send your feedback (in
YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft by either:

A) If you are using Microsoft's web-based, online newsreader for Office
communities (http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx),
click on the "New" drop-down menu and choose "Suggestion for Microsoft"
from directly within the newsreader web page.

OR,

B) If you are using another newsreader (such as Microsoft Outlook Express),
submit your suggestion using your web browser at the following address:
http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
