Move the negaive symbol from the right to the left side of a numbe

I have a situation whereby I am cutting and pasting a large volume of
negative values into Excel from another operating system and the the negative
values are on the right side of the number which Excel 2003 does not
recognise as a number.
Is there a setting in Excel that will recognise the negative if the
character is on the right.
Or, is there a macro/vba to move the negative from the right eg. 500.00-
to the left eg. -500.00.

Select all the numbers with trailing minuses, do data>text to columns, click
next twice, in step 3 select
and make sure that trailing minus for negative numbers is checked, then
click OK and finish
From now on (after making sure that box is checked) you can just select the
column(s) and do data>text to columns
and click finish

Try using Data>Text to Columns.

Range of interest is A1:A5

A1 = 10-
A2 = 22.26
A3 = 15.99-
A4 = 5
A5 = 17.02-

Select the range A1:A5
Goto the menu Data>Text to Columns
Click Finish

This will place the minus sign on the left and it will be evaluated as a
negative number
