mousecntl.exe error

I keep getting popups after I restart windows 2000 prof complaining that
mousecntl.exe cannot be found. I've done a google for this error and cannot
find anything. The only reference that comes close is to mousecntl32.exe
which is supposedly an adware related file or trojan (according to the
message). I've checked registry, startup and processes and cannot find
anything. Has anyone seen this before and knows of a fix?

Details seem to be sketchy but it may be some variant of downloader.crypter
virus.
