Mouse trouble - selecting a range of cells

My mouse sometimes goes crazy while I am working in Excel and wherever I move the mouse to it just keeps highlighting cells. My keyboard functions do not work at this point. I try to right click on a single cell to bring up the menu but nothing seems to work, if I move the mouse it selects hundreds of cells. It does stop eventually but I would like to know if anyone can suggest why this happens and how to prevent it.

either you have enabled the 'extended mode' (the characters 'EXT'
appear in the statusbar). To disbale try hitting F8
