mouse stuck in excel

I am expriencing a strange problem,
When I left click on any cell while in Excel, the left click seems to sort
of stuck
it keeps on selecting the cells whereever I move. It does not allow me to
select anything from the menu or even close the excel.
All I am left to do is ctrl-alt-del and kill the excel from task manager
everything remain fine (selection of menu etc) , if i donot click on any
cell
once i click on cell, I am doomed.
I have tried to isolate the problem:
It started after I installed my USB Optical mouse
Everything else works fine, there is virtually no problem with any of the
application
I have tried to load all patches of Office, even reinstall it
the situation remains same for Ofiice XP or Office 2003

Pleasse help

F8 is used to extend the range.

Select cell A1, hit F8, and click on G9 and you'll have A1:G9 selected.

Sometimes the buttons on the mouse can get stuck. Click on each a couple of
times--include the wheel button if you have one.

But David McRitchie has some notes about this kind thing at:

Thanks for help, I finally resolved my problem today
Don was right, It was due to a stuck button. The wheel button was stuck, as
I physically removed that button.....
The problem solved
