Mouse problems in XP Pro

Recently I have experienced mouse problems in XP Pro.

For no obvious reason the cursor will suddenly move all
over the screen activating menus.

I have formatted the hard disk, re-loaded and updated XP
Pro, updated the BIOS, replaced the video card and loaded
the latest drivers.

I have scanned for viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, etc.

None of this has made the slightest difference, the
problems occurs while using XP Pro and all programs

Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause and how to
recitfy it?

Regards

Before you went to all that trouble did you try a different
mouse?

Is it a cordless mouse? If so maybe someone close to you
has one on the same frequency.

I have a PS/2 mouse fitted to the machine and the answer
is yes; I have tried a new mouse. It didn't make any
difference

Check Control Panel> Mouse for settings such as Snap To or one's that move
the cursor to the edge of the screen when it is not in use.

If this is a laptop that also has an additional touchpad, may need to
adjust sensitivity of the touchpad and/or look for a setting that tries to
eliminate input mistakes that happen when the palms rest on the touchpad.

If still stuck with the problem, try the mouse on another computer to see
if it misbehaves there too. If it does, perhaps wires have broken or a
button is sticking. I know that you said you've tried another mouse -
repeat steps with that second mouse as well. You need to know if this is a
hardware problem - if there's no problem with the pointing devices, perhaps
a damaged ps/2 port on the motherboard.

You've also mentioned checking for viruses, trojans, spyware etc. Suggest
trying an online scanner or two that might detect something that your
applications are missing.

A quick online check for adware, spyware, hijackers and other nasties:

Some sites for online virus scanning:

May also want to try a "clean startup" to see if one of your regular
programs is causing interference with mouse operations. Use Start> Run>
MSCONFIG> Startup for this. Disable all unnecessary items. Test. Then add
the items you disabled back to startup one at a time. Testing after each
addition.
