Mouse Pointer Wanders periodically

Periodically while working, my mouse pointer wanders
towards teh lower left of the screen. Usually, once it's
been there a bit, it returns to normal until the next time
it decides to head South. I can fight it the sudden
gravity by using extra force on the fingerpoint mouse on
my laptop, but it's really annoying. I've noticed
recently that when I type while the pointer is wandering,
it jumps around a bit. Not sure that's useful info, but I
want to be complete.

I'm not using an external, 4 bit mouse, just the internal
fingerpoint that comes with the Toshiba laptop.

Has anyone seen the issue, or have any suggestions on how
to resolve it?

THanks!

Is there a "sensativity" adjustment in the "mouse" driver that you can
adjust like you can on the Dell "synaptics" driver?

There's a PS/2 adjustment, although it doesn't seem to
make any difference in the wandering. I'm baffled.

Have you cleaned the tracking ball?
I had this problem and fixed it with a good cleaning.
Also, clean the mouse pad.
I used Windex.

This is, unfortunately, normal behavior for
this type of pointing device. My IBMS have
all done it to varying degrees.

Your sounds like it's gotten a bit out of hand,
it needs to go back to Toshiba for a fix. It's
not a software issue, but a hardware one.

It's an "Accupoint Mouse" which looks like a pencil eraser
in the middle of the keyboard. There really isn't much to
clean, but I blew out the dust with some compressed air
just to make sure. No improvement. Good idea to check
the mechanicals first, though.

Replace the cap on the mouse. You should have received
several with the Toshiba laptop.
