Mouse freezes--requires a reboot.

Hi all,

I have been using Microsoft Intellimouse (USB) for last 2.5 years and for
the last few weeks it's freezing. And there is nothing I can do to get it
moving again other than a restart. This usually happens when the system is
under heavy load--big installations, number crunching tasks--and I try to do
other things that involves moving the mouse around.

I have a dual monitor mouse and it always gets stuck on only one of the two
monitors while it keeps alive on the other. It can get stuck on any one of
the two.

Plugging-unplugging the mouse does not help. I have tried using the vanila
driver that comes with windows XP and the driver that comes with Intellipoint
software. Problem happens with both.

I have reinstalled the OS hoping that it'll be OK after that, but, it still
gets stuck. Upgrading the graphics driver didn't help either(I am using
Nvidia FX5900XT card and driver).

The mouse was 2.5 year old, so I thought it's a mouse problem, but, after I
got a brand new MS laser mouse 6000 today and try to "stress test". It got
stuck on one of the monitors. I am typing this on the other monitor now.

Funny thing is it's only the cursor pointer that is stuck. I can move mouse
into the other monitor and see the effect of mouse pointer moving over
menubar, right click on the stuck monitor and see the context menu, but,
can't get the cursor to move.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Nachi

OK. People are not supposed to reply to their own posts--but, I just found
something that I really really hope solved the problem. In

Display Properties/Settings(tab)/Advanced(btn)/Troubleshoot(tab)/Hardware
Acceleration, I reduced the harware acceleration by one level--the one that
is supposed to disable cursor and bitmap accelerations. The description there
even says "Use this problem to correct problems with mouse pointer, ..". As
soon as I did it the mouse pointer came unstuck. Didn't need to reboot this
time.

Thanks for bearing me out.

BECAREFUL with USB mouse or KEYBOARD. Especially onboard USB's are not really
really fast as PS2. I am always using PS2 mouse. USB mouse cannot communicate
faster as it with PS2 so. If you start using PS2 Mouse or use faster USB
card, it would not freez up or disable some of the accelerations. Using too
many USB devices could freez up your computer!
