Mouse click in form control loses focus after one blink

For the last ~ 6 months I have had this nagging issue whereby if I click into
an edit control on a form in IE, the cursor blinks once (showing that focus
is set in the edit control), but then loses its focus in the control. The
end result is that I start typing away and nothing is being entered into the
control, or worse I am on a form where I go to hit a carriage return and the
focus is lost to a submit button and my act causes the button to be
activated. Then I have to go back and click into the control again to regain
focus within the control. At first I thought that this was specific to .asp
forms, but I have reproduced it (today) when logging into my Windows Live ID.
I clicked on the Password control, it blinked once, I started typing, looked
back up and noticed that nothing was being typed, I clicked into the control
again to regain focus and was able to start typing successfully.

This is a "consistently random" issue - it doesn't always do this, but it
happens enough to drive me crazy. At first I thought it was because I had
switched over to a wireless mouse (using when I have my laptop docked), but I
got a new wireless mouse and the issue persisted. I even confirmed that this
happens when using my touchpad on my IBM laptop.

I also upgraded my IE from 6 to 7, but the issue persists.

I can't think of anything else that I changed that would attribute to this
behavior. I can't find anything under searches. I've asked IT industry
collegues and they look at me like I have a second head.

Please tell me if there is a better forum to post this under as I could not
find one that would more appropriately address this.

I do use an external keyboard/mouse (wireless) when my laptop is docked.
This is where I witnessed the original issue. I then switched that set
(Microsoft) out with another (Logitechwireless) keyboard/mouse. When working
directly on my IBM laptop's keyboard and touchpad mouse, I have also
witnessed the same behavior. So, it wouldn't appear to have anything to do
with the auxillary devices.
