mounting an ISO image

Back when I had XP on my PC, I ran a cool little utility called
VirtualCD (written by MS). Basically it would run a driver which would
allow me to mount .iso images as a drive letter.

Q1: is this functionality builtin to Vista?

Q2: if q1 is "no", is there a version of this for Vista?

Not that I'm aware of.

version 2.0.1.1 works just fine for me.

Hmm. I moved the VCdRom.sys to the C:\Windows\system32\drivers, and ran
the VCdControlTool.exe (had to run it as Administrator).

When I clicked on Driver Control, it gave me a "Cannot Open SCM: Access
is denied". It then went ahead and opened the little window where I
could install the driver. I browsed to the directory, but it did not
"see" the VCdRom.sys file.

Next step?

When I used Driver Control / Install Driver, the System32/drivers directory
was selected automatically and the .sys file was available.

I don't have UAC on and I'm logged in as an admin. If you have UAC on, turn
it off to see if that helps.

If that fails try something like Daemon Tools (I don't know if that works
with Vista) or MagicISO (I know this does work).

Daemon Tools works great under Vista Ultimate 32

I've had problems with ISO Buster hanging. Both Daemon Tools and Magic ISO,
otoh, seem to work just fine.
