Mounting an external HFS drive

Martin Trautmann

Hi all,

what are the options to mount an external drive with the file system
HFS+ to a PC with Win XP?

Options are via firewire of USB2.

Purpose is to burn files from the backup drive (from Mac OSX) to the
PC's DVD drive.

HFS+ accepts UTF-8 characters. The used ones are typically part of the
ISO Latin-1 subset. However, some file names offer potential conflicts
that should be handled properly by the software.

I don't know about file name and path length limitations. But some files
may use

/"'!&;#*.<>

This should be handled e.g. by a reasonable handling, either replacing
those characters with a wildcard character or best by taking a
conversion table such as

/ -> !
" -> _
' -> _
! -> |
...

Is there some option how to mount and use an external HFS drive?

Thanks,
Martin

You may try my Beta release recovery program. It has been tested on a
few HFS+ drives, and works with USB. Please download at
www.cnwrecovery.com and do mention that you want a Mac support for the
30 day beta version. It will attempt to downlaod the complete disk -
from where you may select the files you want - it is currently free!

Hi Michael,

thanks, I'll give it a try. You don't name HFS yet. while the donwload
sounds very limited. Is it the cnwinstall.msi that I should use?

Alternatives I know by now are (for external HFS drives or Mac DVDs)
+ TransMac
+ MacDrive (media4.com)
+ MacOpener
+ HFVExplorer
+ MacInDosPlus
+ hfsplus (on linux)
+ hfsutils (on linux)
- iPartition
? MacLan

Cnwintsall.msi is the install program
The Beta version will work for Mac MFS+, but you may require the 30
licence (Free) to enable it. Please e-mail the required 8 digit PC
code, and you should get something that will detect the drive, and
download all the files.
