Mounting an exhaust fan on the exterior of case?

Have an existing 80mm fan but there is no room for a 120mm and
would like to use an adapter so it can be mounted on the exterior of
the case.

Has anyone tried this before?

People have done just about everything in modifying computer cases. If
it fits, use it (after all, it's only $4 anyway).
