Most MS Updates will not install since repair install

C

Charles Lee

For some odd reason my screen stayed black instead of showing my accounts
after booting, so I had to 'repair' install of my original XP Home cd...
service pack 2 installed fine, but only after the rename 'fixccs' to avoid
the 100% cpu usage

as a result, all came back as it was, except for some of my MS updates now
wont install, like lots of them
(see list)

I have tried the obvious 'cmd turn off/on updates' routine with the renaming
of the SoftwareDistribution folder, but no change though... ):

any other ideas....???

here I am, back again from the update group, problem solved with the help
from reading a post from Shenan Stanley - MS-MVP

for anyone with the same problem, this is the info that I followed....

Try this:

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot may be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
(You may need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right
after an additional reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

I had the same problem a few days ago & found the following cured what was a
corrupted update engine:

If windows updates fail to install;

First of all make sure your Time is set correctly on your Computer

Open a run command and try to Re-register these DLLs for the update Engine:

(it's easier to copy & paste the commands individually then click OK)

net stop wuauserv [click OK]
regsvr32 wuapi.dll [click OK]
regsvr32 wuweb.dll [click OK]
regsvr32 atl.dll [click OK]
regsvr32 wups2.dll [click OK]
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll [click OK]
regsvr32 wups.dll [click OK]
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll [click OK]
regsvr32 wucltui.dll [click OK]
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll [click OK]
net start wuauserv [click OK]

Then Reboot your machine and try to update at microsoft again.

Go to MS update and try to reinstall/update the MS update module itself.
Also check that your version of Windows Installer is 3.1.4000.4039 by typing
at the Start menu Run "%systemroot%\system32" and then select the
file "msi.dll" . Under File|"properties" for this file you can see the
version number. In case it is not 3.1.4000.4039, then first install security
update KB927891 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891 .
After verifying that these two critical modules are up to date, try
installing the updates again. Turn off your antivirus while installing all
updates and restart as required.
