Although long time user of access (now 2003), I don't know simple access
syntax programming to put into queries, such esoteric phrases as left, mid ,
instr, etc.

What specific books or in home courses are available. I use access for
personal matters, and am willing to spend some time to learn the language,
but my day job keeps me otherwise quite busy.

In addition to Doug's suggestions, you may want to take a look at several
books which list Access (and VBA) language references:

Access 2007 Inside and Out by John L. Viescas and Jeff Conrad

Access 2002 Developer's Handbook Set by Paul Litwin, Ken Getz, and Mike
Gunderloy

and

Access 2003 VBA Programmer's Reference by Teresa Hennig, Graham Seach, Armen
Stein, Pat Cardoza
