Start out with a good book or college course on relational database concepts
and design. This is the foundation to every solid database career, whether
administrator or developer.
Once you have that down, pick a platform (Access is a great choice for
learning), get a book and start working with the provided samples and
exercises.
I find it preferable to stick to a platform (SQL Server, Access oracle) and
get strong on that instead of moving from product to product as some do.
Becoming a DBA is not an overnight process. I've been at it for 10 years,
the last 5 full-time.
