I upgraded my maxtor HD to a 320Gb Deskstar. Bad idea! The deskstar faulted
within minutesof installing it and was RMAd.

So far so good. the drive they have replaced it with is a refurb. It has
installed ok but it's running at 50oC outside the case whilst doing no work.

Is this Ok or does the team think it's heading for a meltdown. I'm running
XP .SP2 I still have the Maxtor and that runs at 32-34oC

Power supply volts are 12.12 and 5.1 (under load) which seems ok to me.

Air flow inside the case, should cool it.

The cooler you keep the drives, the longer they last.

Maxtor hds are really junk, they only give 1 yr of service if that, maybe with
the joint of seagate they might improve in time.Seagate on the other hand
are very good, not only that but where maxtor offers a 1 yr warranty, seagate
offers 5 yr warranty.Plus they work...

I'm always surprised at the maxtor seagate comparisons,
when I first got into computers seagete were the first affordable drives,
other manafacturers cost maybe 3-5 times more,
but all the hdd I have ever seen fail were seagate,
i never saw one of the other drives fail so i was put off seagate,
ive got a stack of maxtor disc drives wich have been used for 24/7 for 5
years or so
and still work with no errors, maybe using them continuously makes a
diference ?

my first 3 segate drives all died and had to be replaced.
maxtor used to publish actual returned failure rates.

Have been building PCs for some 12 years now. In that time, I've seen every
hard drive maker produce lemons. And, of course, with that comes the
naysayers and protagonists allegiance to a given hard drive maker.
