Monitor resolution

I am using a new Vista machine with my old 20" monitor. I like the
resolution to be set at 1152x864 because of my old eyes. When I start the
machine, there is a vertical strip on the right side with no image. I then
change the resolution to another setting which restores the picture. I can
then return to 1152x864.

Is there a setting I can make to get the image to come up properly on the
1152x864 resolution? I had no trouble with the monitor when I was using win
98 (and using a setting of 800x600 which is close to the 1152x864 in Vista
for some reason).

Thanks

Drew

Are you sure that this vertical strip on the right has nothing to do with
Sidebar malfunctioning? Does the Sidebar appear there, or has it been
disabled?

The simple fact is not all resolution choices work well with every
combination of monitor and graphic card. You have to accept whatever
is close to what you want.

I got pretty "old eyes" too, yet I have my resolution at it's native
1920 x 1200 and I have no problem reading text sitting a good two feet
or more away from the screen with a Dell LCD 24 inch Ultra Sharp
monitor.

If your monitor is also a LCD model you should set it to it's native
resolution whatever it is and leave it at that setting. Changing a LCD
monitor to something different than it's native resolution often
results in a much more muddy look for graphics and out of focus text.

If your monitor is CRT type and is "old", you'll do your eyes a favor
upgrading. All CRT monitor darken as they age and they tend to drift
out of convergence too. Both are killers if you spend any amount of
time looking at the monitor.

I agree that text on a LCD model is always sharpest at its native
resolution, I've found that some brands do much better than others when used
at lower resolutions.

What is the maximum refresh rate the monitor will handle? Make sure you
don't have the video card to exceed that. There is a big difference in
800x600 than 1152X848 lol.
