monitor problems after SP2

I finally gave in and downloaded SP2, before I ended up being forced to do so
by Microsoft (I figured the day was coming). But I've heard about so many
problems with it in the past, and I've encountered enough problems of my own
after installing updates, that I dreaded the idea of doing it. And just as I
feared, after I restarted the computer I found my monitor was all screwed up.
(Why can't Windows updates be as simple and smooth as those for Apple
computers?? I have had more crap to clean up and fix with this machine than
I've ever seen on any of the Macs I've used at work combined.)

Anyway, the icons are much larger now, they've been moved all over my
desktop, and the image does not fill the monitor screen--it looks as though
someone decided lopsided letterboxing would be an attractive view (the left
side is 1 inch wide, and straight, while the right side goes from 5/16 inch
at the bottom to 7/16 inch at the top). How do I return it back to normal?
I've got a Sony CPD-G220R monitor with an NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 card.

Make sure you have updated drivers.

Start
Run
Type "control desktop" without the quotes
Hit enter
Settings tab
Check the screen resolution
Advanced button
Check to make sure the DPI is the same (96 is default IIRC)

I did a search and found more recent versions for both, but what if only one
of them if post-SP2? (The other was created in 2003.)

Make sure the DPI is the same as what? The previous setting we had? I don't
know what that was; but it is set to 96 right now.

It's likely drivers then. More than likely the video card drivers. Grab them
from the manufacturer's site and get the newest and you *should* be okay
after installing and, likely, rebooting.

The manufacturer of the TNT2 card may not have an updated driver but you
should be able to use the "standard" nVidia reference drivers. Head over to
www.nvidia.com and get the latest available.

Also, you need to install/update the:

1) Motherboard chipset drivers, which should contain the AGP slot drivers.

2) Monitor drivers, if any.

You should consider changing this TNT2 since it is now extremely limited (and
it was a Windows 98 card to begin with!).
