Monitor "no signal" on Windows XP startup

On system startup (either from hibernate or shut-down) my Princeton LCD 17M
monitor reports "no signal." This happens intermittently, maybe once out
every 5 to 10 startups. In all cases, I've been able to power down my Compaq
Presario and restart without a repeat of the problem. (Of course, sometimes
Check Disk runs on startup.)

I have tried to cycle the power on my monitor, but the "no signal"
conditions persists. I've checked my cable connection both at the monitor
and the computer. I've never any monitor problems except at startup.

I'm running XP Home SP2 with virus and spyware protection.

Since the problem goes away with a hard restart, I'm hoping this is a
software problem (with a software fix), but my fear is that my Intel 82810E
Graphics Controller is dying.

Any similar experiences, suggestions or explanations would be appreciated.

Intel is pretty good about issuing drivers periodically,
make sure you have the latest & seach the support docs
there for your problem.

You don't have to power down blindly, if you have a login
enabled, the keyboard sequence to shut down with no display is:

tab-enter-tab-tab-enter

Yours may be slightly different - find out what it is when you
have the login screen up and write it down.

I run two monitors off of an ATI x700 Pro card. In Windows XP, no problem.
In another operating system, one of the monitors will periodically give an
"out of range" message. All hardware is the same, the only difference is
the drivers being used. Luckily I can reset the monitor (power down/power
up) and get it working. But that doesn't help you much. "Out of range"
signifies an unusable signal. "No signal" is well, obvious. No data is
being communicated to the monitor.

Hmm.... Considering the intermittent nature of the problem, it sounds like
a hardware problem. If not a failing graphics controller, have to wonder if
this could be a power supply problem (not enough or a problem there).
Although the monitors have external power, getting that initial display up
on the screen takes some extra "oomph" from the computer's power. You
probably have more "things" attached to the computer now than when it was
new. What happens if you disconnect a few of these. Does the problem still
happen?

Something obvious, have you checked the cable. They can work loose even the
ones with the screws. Also if there is a pass through cable for hardware
dvd or similar. Otherwise you can pick up a cheap graphics card if it is the
on board graphics thats gone.

Mystery Solution:

I found this on another forum and it seems to have solved my problem, though
with an intermittent problem you never know.

I turned of my screen saver!

I was using the standard MS screen saver with a long delay (>100 minutes).

Hi,
I'm having the same problem, but it happens all the time and the only way to
get my monitor to work is disconnect and then reconnect (while the PC is on).
I changed cable, the video card with DVI.
I wonder, did you find a way to fix the problem?
by the way. i programmed IBM 1440, 360/370 (and all the way to 4380, 9300,
S/3/34/36/38, AS/400)
