monitor isn't in device manager

upgraded to xp professional and now there isn't a monitor
in the device manager list. when i try to install monitor
driver, xp says I don't have one.

Sorry but what's the problem.

Obviously you see stuff, so the monitor is working.

Try updating the Display Driver and when that is right, the monitor will
work.
