monitor driver - I did something stupid

Okay, I was tired and I was trying to get the driver for my new monitor to
work on my secondary XP installation. On the primary installation the monitor
driver just installed itself bu t on my secondary boot it wouldn't. I tend to
keep it off network and use a very stripped down XP installation as I use it
for audio.

Anyway, I was messing with the monitor driver settings and set it to
'demand' a driver at start-up. Now, when it boots it shows me the windows
spalsh screen and then continues to boot but there just a blank screen.
everything is running behind it and I can use keyboard shortcuts to shut it
down cleanly but basically I'm stuck. Safe mode fails, VGA mode doesn't work
show anything either. System restore just took me back to the same point.

What can I do? If I run the installation again with the '98 disk followed by
the XP disk will I mess up my installed programs?
