Monitor Display

My monitor display and any pictures I have are very dark.
The monitor is almost too dark to see the type under the
icons. In Windows 98 this can be set to a lighter tone
and less contrast. I can't find where to make the setting
changes in XP.

You can set up this on the monitor and in the Control Panel > Display
Settings > Advanced if the driver for your video card supports this.
If this does not help, this problem may indicate a hardware failure.
Try using the monitor on another computer to find out if it is related
to the video card or the monitor itself.

Most monitors have a lightness/darkness control knob. Why not adjust there
first?

Most if not all NEW monitors have got onscreen digital settings and no knobs
as you describe. He will just have to go into the Menu and alter the
brightness/darkness settings via pressing some buttons on the monitor.
