Monitor Display Problem After Upgrade and W2K Pro Reinstall

This is my first posting to this group, so forgive me if I'm a bit
verbose. I am not an operating systems "expert" or a master hardware
guru either; so please keep this in mind ...

I have just spent a minor fortune "upgrading" my home desktop box. I
had the motherboard and CPU replaced with an AMD "Athlon-64" 3200+
microprocessor and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics accelerator card.
I also had 512 MB of DDR-400 RAM installed. (I suspect I will get a
pretty good "frame rate" with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 with
this set up ...) I asked my System Administrator here at work if he
could install all this hardware and reinstall my operating system?
(Once I flashed enough green, he said "Yes!")

Everything has went fairly well with the hardware and software, but
I'm having a minor problem with the desktop display on my monitor. I
have an IBM P200 21-inch monitor and I'm running Windows 2000 Pro,
SP4. (The "About Windows" dialogue indicates: "Ver 5.000.<something>,
Build 2195.)

Prior to the operating system reinstall and hardware upgrade, the
desktop display (after bootup) occupied about 90 to 95 percent of the
screen's real estate - and it was "centered" just right - both
horizontally and vertically. After the fresh reinstall, (with 600 x
800 display mode selected), my desktop display is off-center to the
left and the display only occupies about 65 to 75 percent of the
screen. (Outside of the [Windows] desktop display, there is just
jet-black unused screen area.) I went into Control Panel and changed
the display mode setting from 600 x 800 to 1280 x 768. This change
improved the desktop display some, (maybe up to 80 to 85 percent of
the screen covered), but I would really like to get it back to the way
it was.

I think I may need to manipulate the front-panel [hardware] buttons on
the monitor itself, (believe me I've tried!), in order to make the
[Windows] desktop fit the display area just right; but I can't seem to
figure out how those buttons work - and I don't have an Owner's Manual
for the IBM P200 monitor. (When I press the buttons, I can get
various "adjustment dialogue windows" to appear in the lower part of
the screen, but I've been unable to actually change the display
dimensions of my Windows desktop ...) In short, I'm stuck!

I would be very grateful for any help (or suggestions) anyone can
offer to help solve this problem. (Is there maybe a way in Windows to
do the same thing as what those monitor adjustment buttons are
supposed to do?)

Your problem is your monitor and the solution lies within those buttons on
the front of the monitor.

Everytime you change your video card or your resolution-scan rate
combination, you will probably need to adjust your monitor until it
'remembers' the settings for each resolution-scan rate combination for that
video card.

Greg:

Thanks very much for the information - and the links. I have a
feeling this is just what the doctor ordered. Thanks again.
