Momentary freezing-reluctant to restart or turn off

For no apparent reason, system freezes for about 30 seconds to a minute, then
unfreezes, may happen again in several minutes or just a few minutes. My
attempts to restart or turn off fail and error appears "Shelllcom hidden
window" appears when trying to reboot or turn off.
