Momentary Disappearing desktop Icons

R

Ray**

My computer has developed a habit for the desktop icons
to suddenly disappear for a few seconds then seem to
reload and appear again. It is as if the computer was
trying to crash but could not. Does anyone know what
causes this. As I would like to fix it if possible.
Thanks Ray

That what happens when it does crash. Look in the logs in Event Viewer and try to get some detail on it. There will be one entry saying the shell has stopped and started - this confirms that this is what is happening. But there should be another saying explorer.exe had a problem of some type.

It will sometimes reload the desktop icons, but this is normally quick (due to a program writing a file or something).

If it is a crash the start menu and taskbar will also disappear. Explorer.exe does the whole taskbar, desktop, and any folder windows.

Thanks for Your Reply The Task Bar and start menu do
dissapear. I looked in the Event Viewer. and there is a
reference to an error in the source DCOM marked in red
at around the times this happened. Do you know what this
is and could it be fixed without putting the recovery
disk in. There is also a reference to something called An
EPQD program error message in yellow and source user32.
This program was not responding on shutdown. Gray box
with progress bar appeared Do you know how to fix this as
well. I closed this Program down in the Start Menu But
maybe it is something the computer needs Hope you can
help. Happy Christmas and new year Ray

Thanks for your reply. I studied all this noted it. But
resorted to putting a small repair program I have into
the machine. Dont think you would approve of third party
software It does seem to have stopped the difficulty.
Thanks very much Ray
