Modifying Distribution List - Order of names not right

I'm having a problem that doesn't make much sense to me.

In contacts I have selected that the contact names appear
by last names in alphabetical order while using contacts.

When I go to add a contact to a distribution list, the
names suddenly are no longer listed by last name but first
name.
Can I get the Select Members List to be presented by Last
Name as I'm used to seeing them?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !
